G'Day! We are here to raise money for Cancer Research for the Australian Cancer Council. We are very pleased therefore to announce that we're taking part in the Spring Shitbox Rally 2019 from Melbourne to Townsville in a car called "Spoof"!!
We have had at least six rugby-related friends pass away in the last 12 months due to cancer, all of whom were relatively young (or at least not old). On the other hand we have a cousin who survived cancer two years after her husband had passed away through cancer, who himself had survived it for 22 years, and their daughter subsequently survived cervical cancer diagnosed during pregnancy, thanks to Cancer Research UK. It therefore seems to us that money spent on Cancer Research is money very well spent!
The “Shitbox Rally”, now held twice a year, is the biggest single contributor to cancer research in Australia. For those who don’t live in Australia, we are assured that any progress and/or break-throughs here are shared with the rest of the world (e.g. treatment of Mantle Cell Lymphoma in Melbourne).
The rules of the Rally are to prepare a vehicle for less than A$1,000 and raise a minimum of A$5,000 for cancer research four months ahead of the Rally itself. Our Rally is through the outback from Melbourne to Townsville (nearly 3,000km) commencing on 19th October 2019 (during the Rugby World Cup!). A spin-off is that that the Rally should also bring some much needed business and support to many drought-stricken parts of New South Wales and Queensland.
We have bought (for a whopping A$1,000!) a 24 year old Toyota Tarago with almost 400,000kms on the clock that started its life as a NSW Ambulance. It now sports the Spoofing Colours (colours of International Rugby Unions as was in 1983), with a few other risky props (yet to be sourced) to stand out from the crowd (as all you Spoofers know how to do so well!)
So in memory of all our friends whose lives have been so painfully cut short, and feeling confident that our efforts will help save lives in the future, we hope that you are able sponsor us (perhaps in two tranches - one now and one nearer the Rally itself).
We will be posting updates of the "Spoof-Mobile" as we progress through its makeover, as well as charity events and fundraising over the coming months.
Thanks!
Nigel Pearson & Stephen Pearson
Shitbox Rally is the adventure of a lifetime challenging participants and their cars, worth no more than $1,000, this year for the 10th year anniversary rally, over a 7 day across Australia endeavour to raise money for cancer research.
The rally is not a race – it’s a fun, colourful, unpredictable adventure with participants travelling at their own pace in smaller groups. Vehicles often break down but “we never leave anyone behind” and each night is spent camping beneath the stars and celebrating the day’s achievements. It all adds up to an incredible opportunity to see Australia’s vast and beautiful countryside and make lifelong friends, many brought together after experiencing cancer themselves or seeing cancer impact family and friends.
Since it’s inception the rally has been the largest fundraiser for the Cancer Council nationally.
Shitbox Rally is a dedicated fundraising event for cancer research with funds going to Cancer Council.
Cancer Council is one of the largest non-government funders of cancer research in Australia. We conduct and fund research studies across all cancers and all stages of the cancer journey.
Thanks to the community funds raised such as Shitbox Rally we can fund world-class research that reduces the impact of cancer for everyone.
$50 million over the past 15 years has been raised by Box Rallies to date, supporting ground-breaking projects such as:
These projects wouldn’t be possible without your support.
