The SHITBOX RALLY challenges teams to drive cars worth less than $1000 across some of Australia’s most formidable roads, all in the name of charity …and Mark and Vivienne Chase are pleased to announce that they are taking part in the Rally this Spring, from 19th to 26th October 2019 – driving from Melbourne to Townsville (via Birdsville), in a rundown car.
This rally is the largest community lead fundraiser for the Cancer Council in Australia and is now in its 10th year. To participate in this adventure we need to raise a minimum of $5,000….but with your help, we know we can raise a lot more.
So you are probably wondering, why on earth are Mark and Viv (childhood sweethearts, together for 30 years, parents of two boys) are driving over 3000km… in 7 days… in a beat up car?
It’s because everyone has been touched by cancer.
For us we have seen family, friends and acquaintances battle, win and lose to various forms of cancer over the years, but the loss of close friends and colleagues most recently has made this reality all the more present. In less than 18 months, Mark lost two mates to cancer - both in the prime of their lives, happy, with partners, young families, a home, career and aspirations for a life to be lived. Over 16 years ago, we lost a childhood friend – he too had a partner, child and plans for the future. We are both seeing our children grow into fine young men, with dreams and aspirations for our lives together.
Life is too short…. you need to live every day to the fullest, so we have decided to embark on this journey with all its ups and downs, adventures and memories, flat tyres and any oil leaks it may bring in memory of the three mates who were taken too soon and for everyone else who is fighting, survived or who has lost their battle.
Please donate and help us raise money for further research into this insidious disease. Let us know who you are supporting as they will be acknowledged on the car and form an important part of our team … the survivors, the fighters and the flying angel heroes who are no longer with us.
We will be driving for them in true shitbox style: to celebrate life, to honour those lost, to be selfless, to be generous, to support others, to be inclusive, to get involved, to watch out for each other, to have fun and become a rally family fighting for the same cause.
Thank you, and we will keep you updated on our progress.
Shitbox Rally is the adventure of a lifetime challenging participants and their cars, worth no more than $1,000, this year for the 10th year anniversary rally, over a 7 day across Australia endeavour to raise money for cancer research.
The rally is not a race – it’s a fun, colourful, unpredictable adventure with participants travelling at their own pace in smaller groups. Vehicles often break down but “we never leave anyone behind” and each night is spent camping beneath the stars and celebrating the day’s achievements. It all adds up to an incredible opportunity to see Australia’s vast and beautiful countryside and make lifelong friends, many brought together after experiencing cancer themselves or seeing cancer impact family and friends.
Since it’s inception the rally has been the largest fundraiser for the Cancer Council nationally.
Shitbox Rally is a dedicated fundraising event for cancer research with funds going to Cancer Council.
Cancer Council is one of the largest non-government funders of cancer research in Australia. We conduct and fund research studies across all cancers and all stages of the cancer journey.
Thanks to the community funds raised such as Shitbox Rally we can fund world-class research that reduces the impact of cancer for everyone.
Almost $20 million has been raised by Box Rallies to date, supporting ground-breaking projects such as:
These projects wouldn’t be possible without your support.
